Borrowing well, and what it is really costing you

Credit is the one area of personal finance where the gap between the advertised number and the real number is widest. A card quotes a headline rate and earns most of its money from the people who never see it. A loan quotes a monthly payment, which tells you nothing about the total. The useful skill is not finding the best deal in a table, it is reading what you are actually agreeing to.

Two numbers do most of the work. The annual rate tells you the price of carrying a balance, and the total amount repayable tells you the price of the whole arrangement. A longer term almost always lowers the monthly figure and raises the second one, which is why it is offered first.

Start with the score

Almost every price you are offered is set by a credit score you can see for free and most people never check. What counts as a good credit score covers the bands, what moves them, and how long damage actually lasts, which is usually shorter than people fear and longer than lenders imply.

For day-to-day spending, the best credit card for groceries works through why a cashback rate only matters if you clear the balance, and at what point the reward stops covering the interest.

Before you sign anything with a term attached, put the numbers into the loan calculator and look at the total repayable rather than the monthly payment. It is the single most useful minute you can spend on a borrowing decision.

Where to check your own file

In the United States, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains your rights and how to dispute an error at consumerfinance.gov, and federal law entitles you to free copies of your credit reports. In the United Kingdom, the government-backed MoneyHelper service publishes impartial guidance at moneyhelper.org.uk. Neither is trying to sell you a product, which is more than can be said for most credit score websites.

Nothing in this section is a recommendation to borrow. It is written so that if you do, you can see the full price before you agree to it.

What has the biggest effect on a credit score?

Payment history and credit utilisation carry the most weight in both US and UK scoring models. Paying on time every month and keeping balances well under a third of the available limit matter more than how many accounts you hold. Hard searches and account age have smaller, shorter-lived effects.
