Crypto and currencies, with the hype removed

Two things make this subject harder to research than it should be. The first is that most of what is published about it is written by someone who owns the asset. The second is that the rules genuinely change, so a guide written two years ago can be confidently wrong rather than merely dated.

That second problem is the one worth taking seriously. In the European Union the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, known as MiCA, moved the industry from almost no licensing to a full authorisation regime. In the United States, broker reporting on digital asset sales arrived through a new tax form. Neither change altered what Bitcoin is. Both changed what happens to you when you sell it.

Where to start

If you are at the beginning, crypto trading for beginners covers the mechanics before the strategy, which is the right order and the opposite of how most guides are written.

If you are holding something and worrying about tax, read the crypto capital gains tax myth and what the 1099-DA form does and does not do. Both exist because the same two pieces of misinformation circulate every year.

If you are evaluating a specific asset, is XRP a good investment is the template for how this site handles that question: what the asset does, what would have to be true for it to work, and what the honest risks are.

Check the rules at the source

Crypto tax and crypto regulation are two areas where a secondary source is not good enough, because the detail is where the money is. In the United States, the IRS publishes its digital asset guidance directly at irs.gov/filing/digital-assets, including which transactions are taxable events. In the United Kingdom, the FCA maintains a public register you can search before you send money to any firm, and a firm that is not on it is not supervised, whatever its marketing says.

One rule runs through everything filed here. If a piece cannot name what would make the thesis wrong, it does not get published. Price predictions are not analysis, and this section does not carry them.

What is the difference between crypto and forex trading?

Forex trades national currencies through regulated brokers, runs 24 hours on weekdays, and typically moves in fractions of a per cent. Crypto trades digital assets on exchanges that never close, with far larger swings and less regulatory protection. Both are treated as capital assets in most US and European tax codes.
